Know More About Your Body—Eat Mindfully
Today, many people face the issue of metabolic dysfunction without even being aware of it or its root cause.
A metabolic dysfunction or disorder is a disorder that negatively alters the body's processing and distribution of macronutrients, such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Metabolic disorders can happen when abnormal chemical reactions in the body alter the normal metabolic process.
Metabolic disorder could include symptoms such as: tiredness, muscle weakness, sudden weight gain or loss, reduced appetite or developmental problems.
A consistently disturbed metabolism could also lead to development of Metabolic Syndrome, referred to a cluster of symptoms that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, and a condition of diabetes. The symptoms include : Abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, high fasting blood glucose or a condition of diabetes, increased blood clotting, insulin resistance.
‘This metabolic dysfunction takes place at the cell level. When the metabolism starts to go wrong then the body starts to move towards a diseased state.’ - Akshi Khandelwal, Founder & CEO of Café Swasthya
With reference to Ayurveda, metabolism is a prime function of Pitta ( fire) within the body. Pitta is the fire ( Agni) that is responsible for digestion, metabolism and transformation within the body. Liver is the seat of Pitta and is responsible for processing the food and converting it into energy, so that we can use that energy to live our lives.

Metabolic dysfunction sets in when Pitta is left disturbed for a long period of time. And this could happen due to multiple reasons :
1. Eating stale, over processed or packaged food consistently on a regular basis. These include pre-prepared meals, sandwiches, or overly processed bakery items and packaged foods.
2. Consuming foods and beverages that carry artificial flavouring, scents or preservatives. A lot of drinks, and food items available outside home are prepared using artificial flavouring or scents or preservatives. One such ingredient that gets commonly consumed is ‘emulsifier’. Although, emulsifiers do not show any side effect on an immediate basis, however, when consumed on a regular basis, they could lead to inflammation within the gut lining or disrupt other digestive processes, including creating problems of IBS.
3. Intake of food items, made using recipes that are based on experimentation, without checking for compatibility of ingredients. This creates havoc in the stomach, and in the whole digestive system leading to aggravation of metabolic dysfunction symptoms. A lot of the new age cafés are doing this. For the sake of offering new or creating new, they are mixing and offerings foods that are not compatible together, and could affect the metabolism adversely.
4. Excess intake of fermented foods, such as curd, bread, alcohol, dosa, idli, etc leads to aggravated Pitta, disturbing the metabolism and ‘Agni’ within the body, build up toxins, and instigate inflammation and acidity within the digestive system.
5. Poor eating and lifestyle habits not only aggravate Pitta, but they also imbalance the other two dosha. Drinking ‘Cappuccino’ or ‘Americano’ one after the other while working, or eating pre-prepared sandwiches or bakery items made using unnatural ingredients on a regular basis in place of wholesome meal ( or no better breakfast options etc.) could lead to severe digestive issues that built over a a period of time.
